Sinhala Medium education in Sri Lankan schools is one of the primary mediums of instruction alongside Tamil and English. It caters to the majority Sinhala-speaking population of the country and is implemented from primary education to higher secondary levels. The curriculum is designed and regulated by the Ministry of Education, ensuring that students receive a comprehensive education in subjects such as Sinhala language and literature, mathematics, science, social studies, and religion, among others.
Sinhala Medium schools provide a strong emphasis on cultural and historical education, fostering a deep understanding of Sri Lanka’s heritage. Students are also encouraged to develop skills in critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. Textbooks and teaching materials are provided in Sinhala, and national exams such as the Grade 5 Scholarship Exam, GCE Ordinary Level, and GCE Advanced Level are available in Sinhala Medium.
While Sinhala Medium education is widely accessible, efforts are also made to promote bilingualism by introducing English as a second language from early grades. This helps students enhance their global communication skills while maintaining their proficiency in their mother tongue.
